Oil mills are ready to open and the olive season in Maremma is full of hope. Forecasts for the olive harvest in the province of Grosseto are exceeding expectations with an expected 10-15% increase compared to the last season; in contrast with the regional trend where a 20% decrease is expected due to the heavy rains of May that compromised olive pollination.
Despite all the different challenges, according to Coldiretti Grosseto, this year we will have a very high quality olive oil. Simone Castelli, president of Coldiretti Grosseto, believes that the entire province of Grosseto will witness a significant production recovery, despite the fact that 2023 proved to be a difficult year for olive growing in Maremma, since significant changes happened in different areas.
Adverse weather conditions- such as the extreme heat, the water stress, several hailstorms in August and numerous weather anomalies in the past few months - have put both plants and olive growers to the test. Coldiretti predicts a high quality production and lower yields. A situation in line with a general context of production flexibility, where competing countries such as Spain, Tunisia and Greece are witnessing a greater reduction that will irreparably impact prices on a large scale.
